In The Now
I’ve been on the island almost two weeks now. After hair and blood tests confirmed that my adrenals were completely depleted – I had broken sleep, anxiety, and hot/cold flashes. I had taken care of many people throughout the years in this state but never had an appreciation until I walked this road myself.
Coming to an island to work and make a lifestyle in a place I could possibly retire has been a dream for a long time. Kauai herself is aiding in my healing. It’s the small things I notice here – the way my breath aligns with each set of waves as I walk Aruba down the path, the salty air causing me to hydrate more (which is not my thing!) and the general sense to be in the moment. All of which I had lost track of being in the hamster wheel in Austin.
The ‘being in the moment’ may sound like a small thing, but here you need to be present or you’ll miss a passing floral scent, a fleeting rainbow, or general overall thankfulness that your path has lead you to this amazing place.
This is what heals adrenal stress. The reset of a body to natural rhythms. It has taken 2 weeks here to be able to come off Texas time and sleep completely through the night. Aruba adjusted to this a lot earlier than me – dogs are the best teachers of living in the moment. Don’t believe me? Even Eckhart Tolle thinks so. He writes about it in his book, Guardians of Being.
Eckhart writes, “millions of people who otherwise would be completely lost in their minds and in endless past and future concerns are taken back by their dog or cat into the present moment, again and again, and reminded of the joy of being.”
Let your healing begin. First – get a dog!
